Paid Memberships Pro – Series

Paid Memberships Pro – Series is a specialized add-on designed to extend the functionality of the core Paid Memberships Pro plugin by introducing a structured way to organize content into sequential series. This plugin is essential for site owners who deliver educational courses, serialized storytelling, or drip-fed content, allowing them to guide members through a logical progression of posts or pages over a specific timeframe.

Core Functionality and Purpose

The primary purpose of the Paid Memberships Pro ‚Äì Series plugin is to transform standard WordPress content into a cohesive learning or reading experience. By grouping individual posts into a “Series,” site administrators can define a specific order for content consumption. This is particularly useful for membership sites that rely on sequential learning paths, such as online training programs, onboarding sequences, or serialized newsletters.

Unlike standard WordPress categories or tags, which often display content in chronological or reverse-chronological order, the Series add-on allows for manual sequencing. This ensures that a user starting at the beginning of a series is guided through the material exactly as the instructor intended, preventing users from jumping ahead to advanced topics before mastering foundational concepts.

Key Features

Sequential Content Management

The plugin provides an intuitive interface for creating series and assigning existing posts or pages to them. Once a series is established, the plugin automatically generates navigation elements that allow users to move easily between the “previous” and “next” items in the sequence. This reduces friction for the user and keeps them engaged with the content for longer periods.

Integration with Membership Levels

Because this plugin is built specifically for the Paid Memberships Pro ecosystem, it inherits the powerful access control features of the core plugin. Administrators can restrict access to an entire series based on a user’s membership level. This means you can create a “Premium Series” that is only visible to paying members, while keeping introductory series available to free subscribers or the general public.

Progress Tracking and User Experience

The plugin enhances the user experience by providing clear indicators of progress. Users can see where they are within a series, which items they have already accessed, and what remains to be completed. This visual feedback is crucial for maintaining motivation in educational environments, as it provides a sense of accomplishment as the user moves through the curriculum.

Customizable Display Options

The plugin offers flexibility in how series information is displayed on the front end. Through shortcodes and template tags, site owners can embed series navigation bars, lists of series contents, or progress indicators anywhere within their theme. This allows for seamless integration with existing site designs without requiring extensive custom coding.

Use Cases for Membership Sites

Educational Courses and Training

For site owners running online academies, the Series add-on is an indispensable tool. It allows for the creation of structured courses where lessons must be taken in order. By combining this with Paid Memberships Pro’s content dripping features, instructors can ensure that students do not rush through material, effectively managing the pace of the learning experience.

Serialized Content and Storytelling

Authors and content creators who publish serialized fiction or long-form investigative journalism can use this plugin to keep their readers organized. By grouping chapters into a series, readers can easily navigate from one installment to the next without having to search through blog archives. This creates a “binge-reading” experience that can significantly increase page views and site stickiness.

Onboarding and Documentation

Businesses using WordPress for internal documentation or client onboarding can utilize the Series plugin to create guided paths. New employees or clients can be directed to a “Getting Started” series that walks them through necessary setup steps in a logical, step-by-step fashion, ensuring that no critical information is skipped.

Implementation and Configuration

Setting up the plugin is straightforward for those already familiar with the Paid Memberships Pro dashboard. Once the add-on is installed and activated, a new “Series” menu item appears in the WordPress admin sidebar. From there, administrators can create a new series, give it a title and description, and begin adding posts or pages to it.

The plugin uses a simple drag-and-drop interface to reorder items within a series. This makes it easy to update the curriculum or content flow as the site evolves. Additionally, the plugin is designed to be lightweight, ensuring that it does not negatively impact site performance even when managing large volumes of content across multiple series.

Compatibility and Best Practices

Paid Memberships Pro ‚Äì Series is designed to be theme-agnostic, meaning it should work with the vast majority of well-coded WordPress themes. However, because it relies on template tags to display navigation, users may occasionally need to add a small snippet of code to their theme’s single.php or content.php files to ensure the “Next/Previous” links appear exactly where desired.

To maximize the effectiveness of the plugin, it is recommended to pair it with a clean, distraction-free theme. Since the goal of a series is to keep the user focused on the content, minimizing sidebar clutter and unnecessary widgets can help improve completion rates. Furthermore, utilizing the plugin in conjunction with other Paid Memberships Pro add-ons—such as those for email notifications—can help keep members engaged by alerting them when new content is added to a series they are currently following.

While Paid Memberships Pro – Series is highly integrated with the PMPro ecosystem, there are other ways to achieve similar results in WordPress depending on your specific needs:
